Lamentation Number Thirty Nine

Something puzzled me as a very small boy, and my confusion has deepened ever since.  I will try to explain the problem and at the same time respond (as I usually do, in Haiku form) to the the Poets and Storytellers' Friday prompt . . .

WHY?

Why did the chicken?
It's said "Because the higher
the fewer." ??? Search me!

Reminds me of a verse from the Rubyaiyat of Omar Khayyham:

'Myself when young did oft frequent
doctor and saint, and heard much argument
about it and about. But evermore
went out by the selfsame door I came in.'

. . . and I hope that makes everything clear.

  1. Horseman, I think you're out of your (very complex and fascinating) mind.
Only three lamentations to go before Number Forty Two, which, as we know, is the answer to life, the universe and everything.

    1. I've long been a fan of your Very Silly Blog, Doctor, and all I can say is "It takes one to know one." Please keep up the good work.

  2. Hahaha! All as clear as mud, but much more enjoyable. :-) Let's hear it for the chick & egg conundrum...

  3. I'm new here, so please enlighten me. Was misquoting the Rubaiyat, messing up its distinctive rime-scheme, intended to be part of the poem's overall hungover effect?

    1. Hi Priscilla - there are various translations of the Rubaiyyat. I have Richard Burton's (the explorer, not the late actor) and my quote is from that translation - as far as I remember it. As to the hung-over effect. I am. Most mornings.

    1. Hi Helen - what a kind and generous thought. I wish you well. Have you heard 'Voces8' rendition of 'Only You'? They reduce themselves to four for once, with Angela taking the soprano part.
The ending is marred by some barbarian in the audience coughing. You will find the song on YouTube. Search for Voces8 and "Only You' and (EVEN BETTER!) 'Underneath the Stars' where the divine Emily.Dickens will break your heart. Real singing, unlike most pop star females who can do no better than to 'screech in tune.'

    1. Beware! Appearing to have a bescrambled brain is part of my deep cover. I am in fact highly hi-tech literate and have a secret algorithm which detects who 'Anonymous' commenters are and where they live. (Clue - you live about as far from me as you could, and NO! I never told a soul your real name). As ever, I wish you well.

  7. Who needs answers when they can relish Omar? (Personally I like the Fitzgerald version best and I don't care what anyone says, so there.)

I welcome your comments, the gloomier the better. I don't think there's much hope, but that doesn't mean I'm not interested in what you have to say. If you expect me to approve your comment before it appears, you're about to be disappointed. Never have understood why some hypersensitive bloggers need to see what others say before they allow the comment. Poor, sensitive wee souls.
